Inspector Javert is a character in the 1862 novel Les Misérables by Victor Hugo and the 1985 stage adaption of the novel. He was a police officer when Jean Valjean broke his parole. Javert became obsessed with catching Valjean and putting him back into prison. In the barricade, Javert poses as a freedom fighter and a defect of the enemy, all the while he was acting as a spy. He was discovered by Gavroche and captured by the student rebels, but he was allowed his freedom by Valjean. He drowned himself in the River Seine when he concluded that he could not live in admiration of a convict.
